Did you know you can study part-time and still be a deemed full-time student under the Student Financial Assistance program?

If any of the following situations apply to you, then you are eligible for government financial assistance as a deemed full-time student:

» You are at least twenty weeks pregnant
» You are a single parent living with your child who is under
» 2 as of September 30 of the current award year
» You live with your child (your child or your spouse’s child) who is at least 6 years old as of September 30 of the current award year
» You live with your child (your child or your spouse’s child) who has a major functional impairment or mental disorder.
If this is the case, you must be enrolled in courses worth at least 6 credits per session.

Moreover, if you live with your child or your spouse’s child, or you are at least twenty weeks pregnant, you may be eligible for Student Financial Assistance for a maximum of four months during which time you are not a full-time student or a deemed full-time student. This period must fall in between two periods of full-time or deemed full-time study.

Following the same criteria as for being deemed full-time at AFE, students may have access to an Opus card with a minimum of 6 credits.

Support for families

The Ministère de la Famille website offers several useful services and information (french only)

Family allowance is financial assistance paid to eligible families with a dependent child under the age of 18.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) administers the Canada child benefit (CCB). This is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help them meet the needs of their children under the age of 18.
